We know that children develop character by what they see, by what they hear and by what they are repeatedly led to do, yet studies show that the average child spends only 33.4 hours a year in meaningful conversation with their parents but 900 hours in school and 1,500 hours a year watching TV! Schools and after-school programs have the opportunity to intentionally partner with parents and stem the tide of children learning their moral values from our media saturated culture that has no moral compass. Character education develops students socially, ethically and academically. While some schools have a focus on character or an occasional emphasis, our three-year pilot with charter schools will develop a comprehensive character education program that is permeated throughout an ethical learning community and is embedded within grade level curriculum. In other words, it is an organizational development as well as curriculum development approach. Educators will be involved in developing age and subject appropriate lesson plans with character education embedded within the curriculum. Lesson plans will be tested, refined and then stored electronically for easy access by teachers. Moreover, a Curriculum Map will be developed and aligned to state standards so that character education becomes an integral part of an academically rigorous curriculum. Policies, procedures, protocols, honor codes, service projects, and travel experiences will all be part of a comprehensive approach.
